Coolants
Quantity and Distribution
Clean, low temperature
coolant in large quantities, directed to the proper location, is necessary
for a successful disc grinding operation.
Coolant problems are magnified
in disc grinding due to the greater contact areas and greater power inputs
than in a similar operation using the periphery of a grinding wheel.
Machine manufacturers
provide several means of introducing coolant directly into the grinding zone.
Nozzles can direct a flow of coolant between the discs. Fittings can be attached
to the ends of some spindles to send coolant through the spindles and out
through the center hole of the abrasives.
As production rates and
stock removal increase and the tolerances become tighter, the control of the
coolant becomes more critical. For a successful disc grinding operation, make
sure that the coolant is cool and that the distribution system is functioning
properly.
